What a tour is like

A tour is a walk through the restored prairie, with stops to look at the native grasses and wildflowers, the pond, the old terraces from the hay-field days, and the places where we're clearing cedar elm and fighting invasives. Bring your questions about PUB, prairie restoration, or iNaturalist.

What to bring

  • Closed-toe boots and long pants. This is real prairie: tall grass, prickly plants and the occasional copperhead.
  • Water, a hat and sunscreen.
  • A phone or camera for iNaturalist.
  • Binoculars, if you have them.

Insider tip from a local: come in spring for the wildflowers and in fall for the tall grasses turning gold. Summer is hot, and I'm busy hunting.

Spring: wildflowers

Roughly April to May. Look for Indian blanket, coreopsis, black-eyed Susan, Mexican hat and purple prairie clover.

Fall: grasses

Roughly October to November. Warm-season grasses like Indiangrass and big bluestem are in seed, with late bloomers like Maximilian sunflower and bonesets.
